Chris Matthews declared Monday that he's "not happy with the field" of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates
Chris Matthews made the admission about the field during his Monday morning appearance on Morning Joe, which was broadcast from Des Moines, Iowa.
"What are my thoughts? I’m not happy. I’m not happy with this field. I think they have to find a candidate for president that can beat Trump," Matthews said, adding that he is "still looking" into whether anybody in the field can beat President Trump.
Matthews went on to criticize Bernie Sanders, saying he's "not going to be president" and comparing the Vermont senator's campaign to the 1972 presidential election in which the Democratic nominee, Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota, won only one state and Washington, D.C., against incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon. He said that McGovern's campaign "feels a lot like" Sanders and argued that both "excited the party."
Matthews also said he felt like Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts "was riding high" before getting bogged down by "a lot of scrutiny," which he predicted could hamper Sanders. Despite his harsh words for the 2020 hopeful, Matthews predicted that Sanders would win the Iowa caucuses "real big."
Here’s a quick transcript from just the beginning of the video:
MATTHEWS: What are my thoughts? I’m not happy. I’m not happy with this field. I think they’ve got to find a candidate for president that can beat Trump.JOE: And you don’t think anybody in this field can beat Trump?MATTHEWS: I’m looking. I’m still looking.MIKA: What’s the problem?MATTHEWS: Obvious problems. They’re all problems.
It’s funny to hear Matthews admit this because many on the right, including us, have been saying this since Democrats started running. The left has gone full radical socialist, and while it may play well in the Democratic primary, it won’t get off the ground in the general election.
Matthews knows this. He points out how Warren has gotten killed over her expensive socialist plans from voters who simply want to know if they add up. They don’t. She was riding high and now it appears Bernie will be riding high and Matthews says he’ll get the same pushback on his plans as well.
In fact he says bluntly that “Bernie Sanders is not going to be president of the United States” on the very day he predicts Sanders will dominate the Iowa caucuses. Amazing.
