The View’s Meghan McCain,Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg Go Off on Trump’s Coronavirus Address: ‘What the F*ck?’
"The View" co-host Joy Behar panned President Trump's response to the coronavirus on Thursday, likening him to the slow-witted movie character Forrest Gump.
She argued that it was a good time for Trump to resign and that she was starting to gain "confidence" in Vice President Pence as a potential replacement.
"Don't you think that this is a good time for him to resign?" Behar asked. "I mean, Pence has been shown to be rather capable, I believe ... I feel a little more confident with Pence and Fauci at the helm," she added, referring to Anthony Fauci, who heads the National Institute of Allergies and Infections Diseases.
"I do not feel any confidence with this guy," she said, referring to Trump. "He has been incompetent from the giddy-up."
"The View" co-hosts were discussing President Trump's address to the nation Wednesday when he announced that the country would all travel from Europe. Behar pointed out how the White House had to backtrack after Trump said the ban included trade cargo.
Meghan McCain traded the lead to pan President Donald Trump over his Oval Office address on the coronavirus.
As the panel ripped Trump for a speech that was full of bad information, McCain commented that the president is the type of politician who “inspires anger really well,” but he’s “incapable” of being sympathetic and reassuring.
“He could have been reading the phonebook last night. He should have said, ‘I understand Americans are scared,’ have a Ronald Reagan-esque moment,” McCain said. She also slammed Trump for his “inability to emote with the American people” while commenting on how the epidemic has taken its toll on the Trump economy.
McCain went on later by saying “the chickens coming home to roost right now” since Trump has built so much of his political standing on lies and braggadocious claims.
“[These] are an entirely different thing than lying about a possibly lethal disease that can kill God knows how many Americans,” she said. “I think for him, he and Jared and Ivanka and the entire White House should know this could be the silver bullet that takes out this administration.” She clarified that she didn't mean that literally, "so everybody calm down."
Behar added that "a lot of people are saying this is his Katrina." She was referring to the criticism of former President George W. Bush surrounding the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Trump, on Wednesday, attempted to reassure the nation, telling Americans that "the virus will not have a chance against us. No nation is more prepared, or more resilient."
On that same day, the World Health Organization declared the virus a global pandemic. Cases have popped up around the world and, as "The View" noted, even touched Hollywood celebrities. Specifically, actor Tom Hanks tested positive for the virus.
"You know what it is, Tom Hanks has the virus and we have Forrest Gump in the White House," Behar said, referring to Hanks' iconic role.
Throughout the conversation, Whoopi Goldberg offered critical comments about how U.S. officials didn’t take a more strict approach to people that might have the coronavirus who have been traveling in and around the country. This led to Goldberg swearing over lax plane travel policies and how Trump has facilitated that state of affairs:
“If people don’t realize that, you know, when the supposed head of a country says this is what’s happening and you know for a fact that it’s not, you have to stand up and say ‘That’s not what’s happening. It would be nice if it was, but it’s not.’ Because people need to know that, actually, everyone is watching. Everyone’s diligent. People are coming back from different countries coming home saying ‘Oh, I know they’re going to check me out,’ and then you breeze off the plane it’s like, ‘Hey, welcome home,’ like, what the f*ck?”
